The ancestors would have traded beaver pelts for chainsaws if they could,
Master Artist Robert Harju, a member of the Cowlitz Tribe, was commissioned by the Washington State Parks to build a traditional Shovelnose canoe. The unique canoe design features blunt, symmetrical nose on each end that makes the vessel easier to navigate river rapids and change directions in a narrow stream.

Robert is passing on traditional knowledge and techniques to his son, Danial. The two are building a pair of identical Cowlitz Shovelnose canoes, and Danial plans to teach his daughter one day. Once completed, the commissioned canoe will be on display at Silver Lake Mount Saint Helens Visitor Center at Seaquest State Park.
